Review of specified diseases contracted by firefighters legislation

The Workers’ Compensation and Injury Management Amendment Act 2013 inserted Part III Division 4 –Specified diseases contracted by firefighters– into the Workers Compensation and Injury Management Act 1981 – and came into operation on 13 November 2013.

The legislative amendments provide a rebuttable presumption of work related exposure for firefighters suffering any one of 12 specified cancers.

The Minister must carry out a review of the operation and effectiveness of the amendments as soon as practicable after every fifth anniversary of the day on which the amendments came into operation and prepare a report to be tabled in Parliament. WorkCover WA is undertaking the review and will deliver a report to the Minister.

To assist this process, WorkCover WA is inviting comment from stakeholders on the operation and effectiveness of the specified diseases contracted by firefighters legislation.

Stakeholder submissions will be considered by WorkCover WA before a final report is provided to the Minister for tabling in Parliament.

The closing date for submissions is 15 March 2019.

Submissions will not be considered confidential unless a request is made for them to be treated as confidential.

Submissions can be made in the following ways:

By post or in person:                              By email:
